Ryan had a very challenging lesson today. We started in the round yard with the usual transitions and then out into the dressage arena. Grace was challenging today as she wanted to go faster all of the time and then she didn't see why she had to change the rein and go in the opposite direction. Today Ryan became a true rider, he took control and made sure that Grace did what we wanted her to do. A little too fast and hands too high, but WOW isn't he improving!!

Maddy had a great afternoon today. She first groomed Grace and walked her around the round yard. And then spent another forty five minutes grooming Lily. She even cleaned out her hooves. What a great job Maddy!
Maddy and Ryan are regular riders at Sandalwood. Maddy loves to groom Lily and does a great job. She usually has a ride but tends to enjoy the grooming and pampering the most. Lily and Maddy enjoy each others company.
Ryan is progressing well with his riding. Last lesson he started working in the dressage arena. Its a big open space for a young rider but he did very well. Today Ivy started off in the round yard, working on transitions from walk to trot, trot to walk, walk to halt. We also practised doing an 'emergency tight circle', just in case Grace decided to go a little too fast! We progressed onto the bending poles and then went into the dressage arena to experience the big open space. Practised 20 metre circles at walk and trot, and changing the diagonal through the centre. We also practised the most important part of any dressage test, the halt, salute, and smile for the judge! Dental care is very important for horses. Our horses have regular dental checks (shamefully more than we do). It's hard work doing dental work on a horse but our vets do a great job. Ivy has just started having lessons with us. She has made great progress and was very quick to start trotting on Grace. We are looking forward to seeing how she progresses over the next few months. Look out Roma Show 2019! :) Last week Katie, Matthew and Jack visited us for the first time. They first met Driza and had a cuddle with Eeyore. Once Grace and Bucky had been caught some serious grooming was undertaken. Katie and Matthew were very keen but Jack was a bit uncertain to start with but as you will see in the video his big smile says it all. We finished off by feeding Katie Camel and checking out the chooks. Ryan is seven years old. He started riding with us in March this year. He is a very confident young man who isn't afraid to have a go at anything. Bucky gives him a bit of a runaround at times but he can take control of the situation when he has to. We are very proud of the way he rides Bucky! At the end of the school holidays Mel and Naomi, along with their Mum Jen, visited us. As always Eeyore was a huge success. He was particularly friendly and enjoyed cuddles and some ear stroking. The girls both had a ride on Bucky. Bucky was very challenging at times as she was a little naughty, she wanted to take them for a ride as opposed them controlling the riding! However, both girls did well and rode very neatly. We finished the visit with the girls helping to feed all of the animals including the goats and Katie camel.
About eight weeks ago Smokie cut his leg quite badly. Typical Smokie, he is an accident waiting to happen. The cut was very deep. I had to cut the flap of skin and flesh away and then bandage it up.
Horses don't heal like humans when we develop a scab over a wound we leave it there so that the healing can take place under the scab. Horses have to have the scab removed as they develop what is called proud flesh. A deep wound like Smokies had to be hosed every day and the scab removed, we then applied Proud Aid. Proud Aid helps counter the growth of proud flesh. His leg is still very swollen. however. he hasn't lost any mobility and has been working quite hard over the last two weeks. |
